The Light of Hope in Congo

Food, education, and dignity for the children of Uvira

In the far east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, near the border with Burundi, lies the town of Uvira—a place of natural beauty but long afflicted by poverty, instability, and the absence of essential infrastructure.

It was there, in 2012, that a heartfelt and fruitful partnership began with Father Riziki Mubigalo Dominioye—a priest with a golden heart, a man of humility, service, and deep love for his people and their children.

A School of Refuge and Hope

Primary & Secondary Education for 450 children

Father Riziki runs a school complex that includes a Primary and Junior Secondary School, offering daily education to 450 children from extremely poor families—many affected by conflict, unemployment, and food insecurity.

For these children, the school is not just a place of learning, but a sanctuary: a space of stability, guidance, and—thanks to our support—a daily meal, which is often their only one.

Their First Breakfast

A simple bowl of food—an ocean of gratitude

In the summer of 2018, after a meeting with Father Dimitrios, we listened carefully to the children's needs and decided to begin with something simple, yet vital: a daily breakfast.

For these children, it was the first time they could begin school with a full stomach.

A plate of cassava or maize porridge, a few beans, a little warm water—yet their eyes shone with joy, as if it were a feast.

The food was not just nutrition. It was acceptance, care, and unconditional love—a way of saying: "You are not alone."

Cultivating Life

20 acres of land – Food, work, and hope

Alongside the children’s nutrition, we sought ways to support their families—to strengthen local communities with something lasting.

So, we rented 20 acres of farmland and provided seeds and support for cultivating maize, potatoes, and cassava.

This field became the heart of a collective initiative:

  • 40 Christian families worked together to plant and harvest.

  • The food grown fed both children and their families.

  • A model of self-reliance and sustainability was born—one that can be replicated in other areas.

Where once there was only earth, now there are crops and hope.

A Relationship of Trust

From a single visit to a shared path

Our partnership with Father Riziki and the local community is not just about offering help—it has grown into a relationship of trust and shared vision.

We offer support, and they offer love, prayer, cooperation, and hard work. Together, we’re building something beautiful and lasting.

Our Vision for Congo

Congo is a country with deep scars—but also people of tremendous strength and soul. Our initiatives in Uvira are only the beginning. Our dream is to:

  • Support more schools

  • Expand meal programmes for children

  • Create new farming cooperatives

  • Assist teachers, priests, and volunteers who work daily on the frontlines

6
